Media Release: Man caught red handed selling 1,400 contraband cigarettes

Customs officials, this morning, while surveilling the Valletta open air market, caught a man selling contraband cigarettes red handed.
The man, of Libyan nationality, had nearly 7 cartons (each containing 200 cigarettes) of ‘cheap whites’  when he was approached by Customs Officials.
Police officers were called to the scene after the man became agitated and did not cooperate. He was placed under arrest and the investigation is underway.
As of late the fines for selling contraband cigarettes had been increased in a bid to curb the illegal activity.
