Press Release: Customs new recruit, Canine Żekkin, makes his first interception of undeclared cash at MIA Departures Lounge.

Last September, Malta Customs was pleased to welcome on-board, with the ever successful K9 Team, canine Żekkin, a 2-year-old Labrador which was sponsored by the Central Bank of Malta. Żekkin was trained by the UK Border Force, which is considered to be a world leader in the training and management of detector dogs.
Following rigorous training sessions and bonding with his new handler, Officer Żekkin, today, has officially intercepted his first ever case of undeclared cash.

Zekkin discovered an Indonesian passenger in the Departures Lounge,  en-route to Istanbul. Customs Officers from the Anti-Money Laundering Team, on asking said passenger how much cash he was carrying, were told that he was carrying only €3,000. Not convinced by his claim, the passenger was escorted to the Customs Office and following searches carried out in his hand luggage, the amount of €16,295 was elevated.
As per national legislation, the passenger agreed to sign an out of court settlement agreement and was fined accordingly.

Malta Customs would like to take this opportunity to thank the Central Bank of Malta for this sponsorship and is looking forward for more positive results in the combat against illegal movements of cash.
