Non-binding classification of goods by the Binding Tariff Information Unit (BTIU)
The Customs Department would like to inform all Economic Operators that the Binding Tariff Information Unit (BTIU) will be changing its approach when giving an non-binding advice on the classification of goods.
With effect from Monday, 17th December 2018, this Unit will not continue suggesting opinion verbally. Instead, all Economic Operators are instructed to fill in a non-legally binding application form (vide attachment) which will be dealt with by the BTIU within five (5) working days of receiving the same application via email. The 5 working days will start from availability of full and accurate product literature amongst all other information requested in the application. The application must then be presented to the Customs Officer assigned with the releasing of the goods.
The Department would like to remind all Economic Operators that it is not the role of BTIU to give classification, however, it may guide you to the product classification, if after visiting the above TARIC CONSULTATION site you are unable to assess it yourself.
