The Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the EU and Japan entered into force on 1st February 2019 and immediately sees the current 10% tariff on Japanese cars imported into the EU to 8.8%. EU import tariffs on cars manufactured in Japan is expected continue to fall year-on-year.
The Customs Department would like to remind all importers of vehicles imported from Japan that to benefit from the preferential duty rate, the vehicle needs to be originating in Japan in accordance with the rules of origin. Declaring a vehicle with the preferential duty rate when not originated in Japan is in breach of the Customs Ordinance (CAP 37) and thus subject to the relative fine (multa).
