Press release: A busy week for Customs Department Customs intercepted exotic live animals, marijuana and several cases of undeclared cash.

The last days were busy days for Malta Customs.


The Customs Department through its Enforcement Unit and the Anti Money Laundering Team, has intercepted, in seven different cases, Euros 85,208 in undeclared cash from the Seaport and the Airport. These bring the tally up to over Euros 1.7million of undeclared cash discovered by AMLT since it first started operating in Q4 2018.


The Customs Enforcement officials seized also live animals and insects being smuggled illegally in Malta in a vehicle arriving from Sicily. The animals included two exotic spiders, 6 tortoises, a frog, and a box of live insects all concealed in jars and boxes. The live animals were seized and handed over to ERA for further investigations.


Also at the Airport, a passenger arriving from Amsterdam during a night flight, was discovered to be carrying several containers filled with marijuana as well as several joints. The case was handed over to the Police Anti Drug Squad for further investigation.


Meanwhile, at the Parcel Post, a birthday card containing illegal substance was intercepted and handed over to the Police.
