Press release: €23,000 in Undeclared cash intercepted by Customs in two seperate cases

During routine screening of passengers, yesterday, by the Anti-Money Laundering Team in conjumction with the Customs K9 Unit at the airport's departures lounge, two passengers were selected for a currency check as K9 Peter positively indicated that a considerable amount of cash was present in both instances.
During said check the passengers, both en-route to Istanbul, were asked how much cash they were carrying. One passenger advised customs officials that he was carrying around 11,000euro whilst the the other passenger stated that he was carrying not more than 10,000euro. Not convinced by his answer, the passengers were escorted to the Customs Office and following searches carried out on the said passengers and in their personal belongings, 11,875euro and 11,340 euro were elevated. As per legislation the passengers were fined and agreed to sign an out of court settlement agreement.
Any cash or signed cheques valued 10,000euros or more, are to be declared to Customs when travelling to, through and from Malta, as well as other EU countries.
