Press Release: Nearly 319,000 contraband cigarettes seized by Customs in Qormi

Endangered taxes amount to €73,768

During a joint operation between the Customs Enforcement Unit and the Police Rapid Intervention Unit, a total of 318,940 contraband cigarettes were elevated from a vehicle and three garages in Qormi yesterday.

Yesterday morning Customs Enforcement Officials followed a vehicle leaving Qormi and requested the assistance of the Police Rapid Intervention Unit to intercept said vehicle. The vehicle was detained in Għaxaq and searches in the vehicle yielded the discovery of 89,600 contraband cigarettes. The man was placed under arrest pending investigation.
Subsequent searches in two garages, a bar, and the bar's store belonged to two men connected to the detained man, lead to the discovery of a further 229,340, bringing the total of seized cigarettes to 318,640. Both persons were also placed under arrest and taken into custody pending investigation.

The endangered taxes emanating from these contraband cigarettes are as follows:

€55,777 as Excise Duty;
€12,,664 as VAT; and
€5,327 as Import Duty
Total €73,768
