Press Release: The Department of Customs role in combating illegal migration

23 containers, containing a power boat in each, detained at Malta Freeport
Malta’s Sanctions Monitoring Board roped in for assistance

Over the recent months and weeks, the Department of Customs, through its Strategic Trade and Sanctions Monitoring Unit (STMSU), has intercepted 23 containers at the Malta Freeport, all destined to Libya, and which were partially loaded with a power boat each. Their movement was considered restricted as contents within were maritime equipment suspected to potentially facilitate illegal migration.

The boats were withheld following several discussions with the Sanctions Monitoring Board. The boats were prevented to proceed to their intended destination on the provisions of Legal Notice 259 od 2020 ‘Measures in support of actions addressing smuggling activities in the Central Mediterranean Regulations, 2020 and the Customs Ordinance, Chapter 37 of the Laws of Malta.
