Press Release: Approximately 23,650 Euro in undeclared Cash discovered by Peter the Sniffer Dog in two separate cases.

During routine checks by the Customs AMLT Section in conjunction with the Customs Canine Team, two passengers were selected for a currency check as Canine Peter, once again, confidently indicated that a considerable amount of cash was present in both instances.

During the said checks, both passengers en-route to Istanbul were questioned how much cash they were carrying. Both passengers immediately advised Customs Officials that they were both carrying exactly 10,000 Euro. Not convinced by their claim, both passengers were escorted separately to the Customs Office and following searches carried out on their person and in their belongings, 11,480 Euro and 12,150 Euro were elevated.
Once again, Canine Peter’s impeccable sense of smell led to interception of 23,630 Euro in undeclared cash.

As per legislation, the passengers agreed to sign an out of court settlement agreement and were fined accordingly. Any cash or signed cheques valued 10,000 Euro or more, are to be declared to Customs when travelling to, through and from Malta, as well as other EU countries.
