Press Release: 308 counterfeit Euro currency notes intercepted by Customs at Maltapost

  • The second seizure of its kind in four weeks
Following a process of scanning of shipments originating from China, a package was detected by Malta Customs containing counterfeit currency Euro notes, bearing €100, €50 and €20 denominations (as shown in the photo attached).

The consignment consisted of:

  • 103 X counterfeit Euro 20 notes;
  • 102 X counterfeit Euro 100 notes; and
  • 103 X counterfeit Euro 50 notes,
for a total amount of €17, 410.

This shipment is very similar to another shipment detected on the 11th March 2021.

That consignment consisted of:

  • 102 X counterfeit Euro 50 notes;
  • 102 X counterfeit Euro 100 notes; and
  • 103 X counterfeit Euro 500 notes,
for a total amount of €66, 800.

All notes look very authentic to real notes. Shipments were handed over to the Police from the Economic Crimes Unit for further investigations. Central Bank of Malta was duly informed.
