During yesterday’s Malta’s first ever Animal Honours Awards event, organised by the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights together with the Commissioner for Animal Welfare, Peter the Customs Canine won the Best Dog in Uniform Award.
Peter, Custom’s five-year-old canine (born on the 30th August, 2016) was engaged by Malta’s Customs Department on the 1st April, 2018. Following a period of training, Peter entered active service on the 20th September, 2018, and obtained his operational licence on the 15th November, 2018.
In less than three years of service, Peter bagged 84 positive hits, 27 of which were related to cash seizures, detecting €598,859 in undeclared cash. Peter also sniffed out 54 other cases related to tobacco seizures, (totalling to 150kgs) and 3 narcotics cases; 1 case of cannabis and another 2 of cocaine.
